New Bridge Street
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Client: Silverstone Developments
Architect: Sadler Brown Architecture
Scope: Structural Engineering Design
Jasper Kerr have provided Structural Engineering services on this 6-storey student accommodation block on the junction between New Bridge Street and Shieldfield Lane, to the East of Newcastle’s city centre.
The steel frame forms a compact and efficient structure, integrating with the architectural requirements and Rights of Light for the surrounding buildings, as well as the below-ground obstructions such as a Network Rail tunnel across part of the site.
Design was progressed to an advanced stage while an existing building stood on the site, introducing challenges in the knowledge of ground conditions. Preliminary investigations were commissioned while the building still stood in order to give initial guidance to the foundation design, prior to a full-scale SI once demolition was complete.
The Planning process required extensive input and design changes, which were accommodated collaboratively with the Design Team, to the successful achievement of Planning Permission in early 2020.
Individual bedrooms, shared living spaces and studios are provided as part of this development, with 100 bedrooms generated in a prime student region. The stepped levels are utilised as construction platforms, with structural allowance made to accommodate lifting and construction equipment, in order to allow the erection and fit-out of the upper storeys on a tightly-constrained site.
