Northumbria Hub

Location: Newcastle
Client: Northumbria University
Architect: Ryder Architecture
Main Contractor: Robertson CE Limited
Scope: Structural Engineering Design
Contract Value: £1.2 million

The project involved the creation of a new 120-person Student Hub within the ground floor of the Northumberland Building.

Taking advantage of the largely open plan concrete framed building to provide a range of IT rich learning spaces, an existing single storey masonry extension was extensively remodelled to remove internal load bearing masonry walls and form this into an open plan area to match.

By designing miscellaneous steelwork to support the existing roof, the walls could be demolished with little or no requirement for temporary works, whilst maintaining the stability of the perimeter walls.

New fully glazed elevations overlooking the main student quadrant area bring the ground floor area of the Northumberland Building in-line with other surrounding buildings that have either been refurbished or newly built in recent years.
