QE Hospital Pathology Lab. Extension

Location: Gateshead
Client: Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Architect: Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Main Contractor: A.J. Bennett
Scope: Structural Engineering Design

This project extends and improves the existing Pathology Laboratory at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, through the addition of a new two-storey space.

The new-build area includes a covered delivery lobby and blood bank, with storage and reception areas for samples and 1st Floor office space.

The braced steel frame allows the finishes to coordinate with the existing building, while the proximity to existing structural elements required thorough reverse-engineering in design. Existing foundations were analysed and adjusted where necessary, to allow the original building to maintain its level of support despite the addition of the new construction.

As a cutting-edge facility which provides vital healthcare services for the North-East, including testing and diagnosis support, this is a project that we’re proud to have been involved in.
