Hard Rock Café, Guildhall

Location: Newcastle Quayside
Client: David Tilly, Hard Rock Café
Architect: Harrison
Main Contractor: Northern Bear
Scope: Structural Engineering Design & Analysis

The global Hard Rock Café franchise has occupied the historic river-side Guildhall building on the banks of the River Tyne, bringing the unoccupied and dilapidated building back to a position of prominence on the iconic Newcastle Quayside.

The historical nature of the building has been maintained wherever possible, contrasting with modern features and installations within. A new mezzanine enhances the space and offers additional seating and viewing space.

Construction within a historical building has many inherent challenges, from unknown sub-structure and ground conditions to previous alterations. Targeted intrusive works have been carried out in order to allow detailed analysis of the existing structure, with strip-out works and asbestos removal programmed to allow the design to be carried out early, preventing delay to the construction process.

Memorabilia from the world of music and film is displayed, with a focus on North-East icons, highlighting the Client and Design Team’s passion for the region.
