Henderson Hall

Location: Newcastle Cochrane Park
Client: Newcastle University
Architect: Newcastle University / Ian Belsham Associates
Main Contractor: Robertson CE Limited
Scope: Structural Engineering Design
Contract Value: TBC

This project dramatically improves the changing facilities at the existing Cochrane Park campus, which is the principal competitive venue for football, rugby, lacrosse and cricket.

An additional state of the art rowing ergometer training centre and multipurpose space is included to complement the current training facilities for the rowing team, and offer training areas for the competitive teams.

The existing sports pavilion houses changing facilities, a function suite and bar facilities and was used as an official Games-Time Training Venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In need of improvement, the 2 new steel framed extensions to the existing pavilion building have been designed to be sympathetic to the massing of the original building, whilst also complementing the traditional with the contemporary.

The single storey gym to the north-east of the main building benefits from near fully glazed elevations, whilst the 2-storey changing block to the south-east of the pavilion utilises circulation spaces at the interface between the new and existing to mimic the form of the original building, before switching to a more modern flat roofed massing for the changing rooms themselves.
